Three Things Christians Can Learn from Nietzsche

Recently, on my youtube channel I discussed three important things that we can learn from Nietzsche, for those who follow my blog instead of my channel, this content is made for you to get a quick update for what I am doing there and also to direct you towards the youtube channel for more indepth discussion. That said, for those who come here from the youtube channel, the plan is to give you a brief summary of the videos that I make… So here it is, three things we can learn from Nietzsche:

Separate yourself from society:

One of the most important things that we Christians are called to do is to love our neighbours and evangelise, so the first one might come as a bit of a surprise, why would I ask you to separate yourself from society?

Well the reason is actually quite simple. Instead of hating society and getting rid of it, separation is needed in order to make sure that you do not get too involved in fighting society and by doing so you too become part of the problem.

At the end of the day, societal values are very different from Christian values, and as Nietzsche says,

He who fights with monsters must be careful lest he thereby become a monster.

“Maxims and Interludes.” BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL: (World Classics, Unabridged), by FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE, ALPHA EDITIONS, 2016, p.46.

Yes, we must defend our faith via truth and arguments against all opposition, but at the same time, we need to recognise that we must not loose sight of the bigger picture, which is evangelism and our walk with Christ. If society is harming your psyche too much, make sure you leave it!

Find out your prejudices:
We all have our prejudices and presuppositions. Therefore, the second most important thing that Christians can learn from Nietzsche is to figure out what these are. When we do, we can realise whether our hearts are truly in the right place.

Don’t act out of ressentiment:

Ressentiment is the slave mentality where the oppressed play the victim card and use their victim mentality to justify all their actions. We must not act out of this idea of ressentiment, we must act out of love and kindness.

For further discussion, make sure to check out the youtube video which accompanies this upload which can be found here. Checking out my channel and subscribing would really help the ministry and outreach on that front and means a lot to me.

    1. perhaps I didn’t make it too clear in the blog post, but I guess what I was trying to say is that the more you delve into fighting your enemy or something, the more easy it is to fall into the same problems less so than directly separating oneself from society.
