What Order Should You Read Dostoyevsky?

Intro:

Reading Dostoyevsky is one of the most fulfilling things you can do in philosophy, but it can also put you on an emotional rollercoaster and bring you into the darkest depths of humanity. In the recent video on my channel (which you can find here), I discuss the order in which you should read Dostoyevsky dependent on who you are and what your worldview is. Here I will just write the orders and for more detail, make sure to check out the video.

Christian:

If you are a Christian, and you are not doubting your faith significantly, I would recommend that you read Dostoyevsky in this order

  1. The Idiot
  2. The House of the Dead
  3. The Brothers Karamazov
  4. Notes from Underground
  5. Demons
  6. Crime and Punishment

Agonstic:

If you are not really sure if God exists or if you are a Christian doubting your faith, I would recommend that you read Dostoyevsky in this order:

  1. The Idiot
  2. Notes from Underground
  3. Demons
  4. Crime and Punishment
  5. The Brothers Karamazov
  6. The House of the Dead

Atheist:

If you are an atheist, I would recommend that you read Dostoyevsky in this order:

  1. Notes from Underground
  2. Demons
  3. Crime and Punishment
  4. The House of the Dead
  5. The Brothers Karamazov
  6. The Idiot

Final Notes:

  1. the order between the House of the Dead and the Brothers Karamazov are interchangeable for the theist and the atheist, though I do think that ending with the House of the Dead for the agnostic is beneficial
  2. I will recommend you to read Dostoievsky: An Interpretation by Nikolai Berdyaev, it is a beautiful book on Dostoyevsky. Although I don’t agree with everything he says, it is a good place to start
  3. I wouldn’t recommend Poor Folk, it is good, but it isn’t key to understanding Dostoyevsky
